Bringing patients' voices into mainstream drug-safety monitoring

Bringing patients' voices into mainstream drug-safety monitoring A recent report strongly promotes the value of including patients' experiences of health treatment in official safety monitoring processes. Historically, most reports on safety issues, such as adverse reactions to drugs, have been sent to regulatory authorities and manufacturers only by health professionals. While patient reporting has recently been encouraged, for example by EU legislation, it is still in its infancy and there are sceptics who doubt its value. The PROSPER Consortium (Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Safety Event Reporting) was convened and chaired by Dr Swapu Banerjee, Deputy managing director of Pope Woodhead, supported by patient network PatientsLikeMe and with input from most global pharmaceutical companies, many clinical and academic groups with an interest in PROs, as well as some regulators and patients associations, to examine the issues and provide guidelines for good practice in pharmaceutical manufacturing, regulation and all aspects of healthcare....

Detecting hidden signals of potential drug problems
UMC Research Team refines automatic screening of data
Uppsala Monitoring Centre (UMC) has a full-time scientific research team constantly working to improve the detection of possible harm to patients from the use of medicines. In a recent project, they have established a new way of uncovering (unmasking, in the jargon) information that can otherwise remain hidden in enormous data-sets. This new algorithm excludes outlier reports that can distort analysis and mask other possible problems of interest. (Please login to see the link)

Uppsala researchers offer new way to detect harmful drug interactions
The potent chemicals that are modern medicines all carry some risk of harming patients as well as helping them. When you mix two or more medicines, or mix medicines with some herbs or foods, the risk of harm is increased by the possibility of interactions between the various substances. Every one of us taking medicine is vulnerable to interactive effects, even from apparently innocuous products like paracetamol, aspirin, and antacids, or natural substances like...
