- A 3.4-fold excess mortality and 27% 1-year mortality rate were recognized among Israeli patients with BP.
- The pooled estimate for 1-year mortality in BP patients is 23.5% worldwide.
- The pooled estimate for 1-year mortality is significantly higher in European cohorts relative to American and Asian ones.
Figure legend: Survival among all patients diagnosed with BP throughout 2000-2015 compared with expected survival.

Papulopustular rosacea and demodicosis are common facial skin conditions that can be difficult to diagnose clinically. In addition to well-known signs, such as vascular signs, papules and ocular involvement, we show that other signs and symptoms (discreet facial follicular scales, dandruff, folliculitis on the scalp, facial or scalp pruritus) are also frequently present. Their detection should encourage dermatologists to perform a Demodex density test to ensure correct diagnosis.

The immune mechanisms involved in atopic dermatitis (AD) are complex and little is known about the possible role of the gut microbiota in the aetiopathogenesis of AD. A systematic review of the literature was performed according to PRISMA guidelines, and included 44 of 2,199 studies (26 observational and 18 interventional studies). Detection of gut microbiota was performed by either 16s rRNA PCR, ...

Treatment of male androgenetic alopecia with 5α-reductase inhibitors is efficacious. However, the risk of adverse sexual effects remains controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the risk of adverse sexual effects due to treatment of androgenetic alopecia in male patients with finasteride, 1 mg/day, or dutasteride, 0.5 mg/day. Fifteen randomized double-blinded placebo-c ...

Mechanobullous epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (mEBA) can have a clinical presentation that is very similar to other blistering diseases, such as porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) and pseudoporphyria. Direct immunofluorescence is an important feature in the diagnosis of mEBA, although features that overlap with PCT and pseudoporphyria have been reported. This retrospective observational study investig ...

Pink flat skin lesions on the legs in elderly people represent a diagnostic challenge due to the paucity of clinical and dermoscopic evidence. A prospective study of 114 pink flat lesions on the legs of 85 elderly patients was performed to describe the utility of reflectance confocal microscopy in this clinical context. Evaluation of clinical, dermoscopic and confocal parameters and calculation of ...

Treatment of alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis is often challenging and unsatisfactory. Recently, Janus kinase inhibitor has shown promising results. The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy and tolerability of oral tofacitinib and conventional modalities for treating refractory alopecia totalis/universalis. A total of 74 patients (18 treated with tofacitinib, 26 treated with conve ...

Papulopustular rosacea and demodicosis are characterized by non-specific symptoms, which can make clinical diagnosis difficult. This retrospective study of 844 patients assessed the diagnostic importance of clinical signs and symptoms that are poorly recognized as being associated with these conditions. In addition to well-known signs (vascular signs (present in 80% of patients), papules (39%), pu ...

Conventional treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis often leaves permanent scars with frequent psychosocial sequelae. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy, safety, associated pain and final cosmetic outcome of fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser followed by topical application of sodium stibogluconate vs. sodium stibogluconate injections for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis. A ...

The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and influence of predatory journals in the field of dermatology in Austria. A total of 286 physicians (50.5% men) completed a questionnaire. The vast majority of subjects read scientific articles (n = 281, 98.3%) and took them into consideration in their clinical decision-making (n = 271, 98.5% of participants that regularly read scientific ...

Deregulated Hedgehog signalling is a driver of basal cell carcinomas. One effector of the Hedgehog pathway is n-MYC. c/n-MYC proteins, NAMPT and DBC1 are linked to SIRT1 in a positive feedback loop that may contribute to tumorigenesis of basal cell carcinoma. In 5 basal cell carcinoma types immunohistochemistry revealed n-MYC, NAMPT and SIRT1 expression. DBC1 was homogenously expressed in all epit ...

There is little consensus regarding mortality data in bullous pemphigoid (BP). The aim of this study was to evaluate mortality among a relatively large cohort of Israeli patients with BP and to perform a meta-analysis synthesizing existing data on 1-year mortality rates of patients with BP. This retrospective cohort study of 287 patients diagnosed with BP between 2000 and 2015 compared the mortali ...

Coeliac disease is an immune-mediated enteropathy driven by gluten, which can be associated with dermatitis herpetiformis. The presence of granular IgA deposits, detected by direct immunofluorescence, is the hallmark of dermatitis herpetiformis; nevertheless, IgA deposits have also been demonstrated in healthy skin of patients with coeliac disease. The main objective of this study was to investiga ...

Genome-wide association studies have recently identified a number of non-major histocompatibility complex regions associated with psoriatic arthritis. However, data on Chinese patients with psoriatic arthritis and the differences between psoriatic arthritis and cutaneous psoriasis are limited. This study genotyped 12 single nucleotide polymorphisms in 379 patients with psoriatic arthritis, 376 wit ...

Although desmoplasia has been associated with poor prognoses in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, little attention has been paid to the patterns of fibrosis. This study aimed to examine the different stromal fibrotic patterns as markers of metastatic risk. We performed a multicenter retrospective study that included 102 cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (52 non-metastatic and 50 metastatic carci ...
