Laser Dermatology. Pearls and Problems by David J. Goldberg. ISBN: 9781405134200. Hardcover. 200 pages, 325 illustrations. Price: £75.00. Blackwell Publishing, 2008.
David J. Goldberg is a dermatologist from New York, USA, who has specialized in laser surgery for 20 years. He is one of the pioneers in this field, and has vast experience in laser dermatology. He has been a frequent speaker at many dermatological laser meetings, for example, at the American Society of Laser in Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS), the International Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ISDS), the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), Controversies in Laser Surgery, International Meeting for Cosmetic and Aesthetic Society (IMCAS), etc. According to PubMed Dr Goldberg has published at least 70 articles, and has written many books about lasers, often detailing the complications of laser or intense pulsed light (IPL). Dr Goldberg not only has an MD, but also a JD, which means that he is educated as a lawyer. These interests are well-represented in this book, which is unique in its outlook.
The book covers the highlights of five major areas of dermatology: vascular lasers; laser hair removal; pigmented lesions, tattoos and disorders of hypopigmentation; ablative lasers and devices; non-ablative photorejuvenation and remodelling. It also includes cosmetic and aesthetic aspects and the latest models of treatment modalities. Each chapter begins by highlighting essential concepts and includes a review of the subject, covering relevant controversies.
The book is clear and easy to read. Both experienced laser surgeons and beginners in the photothermolyses field will appreciate this book and will be able to use it to improve their knowledge. One feature that differs from other laser books is that, rather than using “before and after” photographs, the illustrations highlight some of the many “pearls and problems” seen in the field of laser dermatology. I can highly recommend this book
