Unauthorized Intrusion into Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine Computer

2007-02-20

During the second week of February 2007, we discovered that external manipulation of an editorial office computer of Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine (JRM) had occured: In an E-mail to the contributors to the White Book of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in Europe, published as supplement 45, January 2007, the link pointing to our web site (with the White Book pdf file) was changed, pointing instead to the web site of Europa Medicophysica (with their version of the White Book). Almost simultaneously, we discovered that the open access to the JRM version of the White Book through our home page had been removed (after having been openly accessible since publication).

We were able to completely exclude any internal reasons for these changes.

This is very disturbing, as we had promised the Editors and the organizations responsible for the White Book to keep it openly accessible to everybody. These incidents suggest that somebody with an interest in hindering access to the JRM version of the White Book has gained access to our network to make these changes.

The problem is currently being investigated by the IT Security Department of Uppsala University, of whose network our editorial office computers are part.

If you should come upon any further disturbances, we would be very grateful for notification of this fact.
