Life span care issues of transition into adulthood and adult life of patients with a disabling condition since childhood
Professor Henk Stam, MD, PhD, FRCP, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University Medical Center, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Henk Stam is specialised in rehabilitation medicine, and is professor and chief of staff of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of Erasmus MC; University Medical Centre in Rotterdam. He was chairman of the European Society for Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine 2003-2007, and is very well-known within rehabilitation medicine internationally. He is also a member of the Editorial Committee of the Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine, founded by Olle Höök and published in Sweden. Henk Stam leads research groups, which focus on monitoring activity level in functional impairments; physical capacity and training; the transition to adulthood for children with children with cerebral palsy, myelomeningocele, and trauma and congenital functional impairments of the upper extremity. He has published a number of original papers within these areas. The theme for the lecture is highly topical, as we have had insufficient knowledge about the specific problems of – and measures needed for – these patient groups as they transition from child- to adulthood. An important survey has been made of these problems in the Netherlands during the last few years. This lecture should thus be of interest to paediatricians, neurologists, orthopaedic specialists and general practitioners.
A lecture in memory of Olle Höök, who passed away in 2006, will be a yearly occurrence. These lectures are initiated by the Foundation for Rehabilitation Information and Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine
