Instructions for Authors

Preparing for submission

Submission of a manuscript is held to imply that it has not previously been published and is not otherwise submitted for publication (except as an abstract, which in that case has to be stated).

Authorship. All persons designated as authors must participate sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility in its contents. For criteria for authors see "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals" Ann Intern Med 1997; 126: 36-47, or JAMA 1997; 277: 927-934. The full document is available at www.icmje.org. The journal may require authors to justify assignments of authorship. Manuscript must be accompanied by a covering letter signed by all co-authors.

Length and number of copies: Articles and reviews should not exceed 10 printed pages (approx. 25 double-spaced manuscript pages). Letters to the Editor should not exceed 2 printed pages (i.e. ~1200 words and one illustration). A maximum of 3 illustrations are allowed (provided the number of words is proportionally reduced). A letter should be written in a concise style(no Abstract) with no redundant information and a maximum of 15 references.
Submit the manuscript (including tables and figures) as a styled Microsoft Word file and photographs as separate EPS or TIFF files. For further information please contact the Editorial office.

Language. All papers should be written in English. It is essential that the language be irreproachable. If the Editorial Board should consider it necessary, manuscripts will be subjected to language examination at the author's risk and expense.

Conflict of interest and funding: Authors are responsible for recognising and disclosing financial and other conflicts of interest that might bias their work. They should acknowledge in the manuscript all financial support for the work and other financial or personal connections to the work.

Statistics: If statistical data are an essential part of the paper the authors are requested to submit an official statement issued by a statistician (with a proper affiliation) regarding the validity of methods used.

Ethics, consent and CONSORT: When reporting studies on human subjects, indicate whether the procedures followed have been improved by an ethic committee (in accordance with ethical standards on human experimentation and with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 1983. Identifying information should not be published in written descriptions, photographs and pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or parent or guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Papers including animal experiments or clinical trials must be approved by the local ethics committee, which then has to be stated in the Material&Method section.
In order to improve the quality of randomised trials we have adapted to the CONSORT statement. Please visit www.consort-statement.org for further instructions.

Copyright: A copyright form has to be signed after acceptance but before publication in Acta Dermato-Venereologica. Authors may, of course, use the material elsewhere after publication provided that prior permission is obtained from Acta Dermato-Venereologica. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources. The open access policy of Acta Dermato-Venereologica.

Arrangement of manuscript

Manuscripts should be type-written, double-spaced throughout, on one side of the paper, with ordinary margins. Paper should normally be divided into Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion and References.

Abstract. The abstract not exceeding 150 words and preferably in one paragraph, should state the reason that promted the study, purpose, methods, the most important findings and as a conclusion the single most important finding. No headlines. In general, abbreviations are not allowed and references should not be used. A list of from 3-6 key words suitable for indexing terms should be typed at the bottom of the Abstract page.
Below the abstract: Title of journal; The principal author's complete address, including e-mail. The Abstract should be typed on a separate sheet.

Pages of main text

Pagination. Ensure that all text pages are correctly numbered in the top right-hand corner, beginning with the title page.
Headings. Use capitals: MATERIAL AND METHODS; RESULTS (CASE REPORTS); DISCUSSION; ACKNOW-LEDGEMENT(S); REFERENCES.
Subheadings. Use lower case letter italicized or underlined.

References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. No abstracts from proceedings or "Submitted manuscripts" not in press are allowed. Identify references in text by arabic numerals in parenthesis as follows: , "as shown by Smith (5)"; ... if two authors: "Smith & Jones. (6)"; ... if more than two authors: "Smith et al. (7)". The style of references must follow the Vancouver system, and for the abbreviations of journal titles: please consult the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus, published annually as a list in the January issue of Index Medicus, also accessible at www.nlm.nih.gov.
